Takeover Lismore creates a powerful platform for Lismore’s youth to be heard.
What is TAKEOVER Lismore?
Thirty-four school-aged students have taken over Lismore to share their stories as part of the ABC’s Takeover Youth Summit. This exciting event is a collaboration between the ABC, the Office for Youth, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR). These talented young people were chosen to have their stories and ideas showcased on the ABC during and after the Summit, highlighting the unique perspectives and courage of young people in the region.
FRRR is backing these initiatives by helping community organisations adopt and implement the ideas developed by the Summit participants. The winning stories from Takeover Lismore are being featured across the ABC during the week of 20 May 2024. The week that was!
Tuesday: We had the incredible opportunity to meet with the young winners of Takeover Lismore and hear their inspiring stories. Our organisation, Nimbin Youth, was thrilled to share our mission and express our unwavering support for young people in the community. The young minds in our Nimbin Youth cohort have chosen to focus on events and they came up with an amazing idea: Youth Fest! A festival for young people, by young people!
Wednesday: Our cohort, along with others, presented their ideas for change, discussing their visions for the local community. The young people from Nimbin Youth Group showcased “Youth Fest” to over 200 key stakeholders in and around Lismore, including the Mayor of Lismore, Steve Krieg, the Office of Youth, Lismore City Council, Tropical Fruits Inc, Plan C, Connect Northern Rivers, FRRR, and the ABC, among others. It was truly inspiring to see these young people step up and ignite our passion!
Thursday: We’ve developed a solid plan! It’s going to require a lot of hard work, but we are confident that this initiative will be a huge success. Our ultimate goal is for young people to feel heard, empowered and supported in their vision for “Youth Fest.”
